During the International Schools Sports League (ISSL), students from the Pan American School (PAS) had the opportunity to participate in an international sports tournament that brought together students from different schools and cultures. More than just performance on the court, the experience reinforced the school’s role in providing learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

According to Mr. Renato Petry, Secondary School Assistant Principal, participating in the ISSL goes far beyond competition. “It represents an exceptional opportunity for the holistic development of students, reaching beyond the boundaries of the classroom and the sports court, serving as a platform for developing social skills,” he stated. In the context of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Curriculum, these experiences contribute to shaping individuals who are aware and prepared to engage meaningfully in a globalized world.

By connecting with students from various nationalities and cultures, PAS students are exposed to different realities. “Participating in the ISSL means actively investing in the development of students who are not only academically competent, but also socially skilled, effective communicators, and culturally aware—prepared to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world,” Mr. Renato added.

Team Spirit and Learning Beyond the Scoreboard

In sports, the school delivered strong results in volleyball, with the boys’ team securing 3rd place and the girls’ team finishing 4th. In futsal, the challenges were greater, with both teams ending in 8th place. However, the Physical Education teacher, Mr. Tomé Perguer, emphasizes that the most outstanding value lies in the students’ growth both on and off the court.

"ISSL is an important tournament for us not only to improve our technical and tactical skills, but also to learn how to deal with adversity: we significantly improved our teamwork, emotional control, self-esteem, and most importantly, we created lasting memories and impactful experiences," he stated.

Participation in the tournament also strengthened the school’s identity and sense of community among the students. According to Mr. Renato Petry, “Initiatives like this are powerful catalysts for strengthening both the school’s identity and students’ sense of belonging and community.”

The tournament fosters a collective experience, bringing together students, teachers, and families around the common goal of representing PAS. “Wearing the school uniform and carrying its flag on an international stage truly embodies and reinforces the pride of belonging to the institution,” Mr. Renato highlighted.
